#TheFraudTube LogoIn preparation for the launch of TheFraudTube.com at the 2012 MRC European Congress we have attended a series of events and provided some live coverage via Twitter as a test run for how #TheFraudTube will report at future events that are of specific interest to the counter fraud community. The events attended so far have included:

Tackling Fraud and Error in Government

Recent estimates suggest that fraud against the public sector costs public services around £21bn in the UK. In looking to deliver better services at a reduced cost, the Government has highlighted fraud as a key area in which major savings can be found and, as reform is implemented across the public sector, ensuring that measures are in place to tackle fraud and error will be crucial.

Following the recent Government report “Tackling Fraud and Error in Government” (see below), fraud detection and prevention is receiving a level of focus which is unprecedented. There is an opportunity to reduce losses by implementing anti-fraud strategies, policies, and controls; if done correctly then the result would be a reduction in the current deficit in Government finances. The Government’s priorities are in Collaboration, Assessment of Risk and Measurement of Losses, A Focus on Prevention and taking A Zero Tolerance Approach.

On 24th May GovNet will be hosting the inaugural Fraud and Error conference, which will bring together over 350 delegates, 20 high level speakers and 20 service providers to discuss and understand the key challenges facing the public sector. Fraud Consulting will be participating at this event so why not come and meet us? With our extensive background in tackling fraud within the private sector (such as financial services), we will share our experiences and explore how the approaches taken in the private sector could be applied to the public sector.

For further details of this event, please visit the event website.

European Commission and Data Protection Reform, What Will it Mean for Us?

Source: European Commission, 25th Jan 2012

A couple of entertaining videos have come out from the European Commission on the topic of data protection (see below). Whilst highly amusing the serious question is this; what will data protection reform mean for counter fraud specialists? What will it mean for existing measures for fraud prevention/detection which are often dependant upon (strictly controlled) sharing of data?

There are a number of papers, press packs and factsheets knocking around and there is also a dedicated minisite from the EC. We will be keeping an eye on this as things progress, it could be very interesting…

Source: Credit Today & Fraud Consulting, 7th November 2011

We asked Simon Baum, Director of Group Risk and Regulatory Relations at Santander for his view on current fraud trends at a recent Credit Today event.

“…you close one avenue and they [the fraudsters] will immediately look for new avenues…”

The Fraud Prevention Forum now on LinkedIn

Co-sponsored by Fraud Consulting, the Fraud Prevention Forum (FPF) now has a LinkedIn group. Join the group and get all of the latest news and discuss current trends and problems with your peers. Unlike many similar groups on LinkedIn the FPF has chosen to closely monitor the membership, ensuring that only those people who work directly in fraud and risk management may join and to minimise “noise” in the postings that are made.

To mark the launch of the LinkedIn group we are offering the chance to attend the forthcoming GRC conference for free, saving up to €900 + VAT. To be in with a chance of getting a pass for this event please join the group and find further details in the “Promotions” tab.

We hope you will join and contribute with interesting discussions on fraud, identity, information security, and related topics or challenges in your business.
